Ellen Makofsky - 35 Years In - Makofsky Valente Law Group, P.C.
Quicker than a camera flash—that’s how the past 35 years feel. That’s what happens when you truly enjoy what you do—the years just seem to fly by.

This year, Makofsky Valente Law Group, P.C. is celebrating its 35th anniversary. We’d like to use the month to reflect on what Elder Law looked like 35 years ago, what changes we’ve experienced over the years, and where we see this important area of law heading in the years ahead.

I still remember opening the firm with a now-retired partner as if it were yesterday. Back in 1991, Elder Law was barely a blip on the radar. In Nassau County, there were only a handful of firms focusing on elder law–related issues. We were true pioneers.

There were no roadmaps, no books, no software, no templates. If you wanted to understand Medicaid eligibility or draft a will, trust, power of attorney, or health care proxy, you had to build it from the ground up. And that’s exactly what I did—studying statutes, combing through regulations, and crafting documents line by line. It was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, and it gave me a deep understanding of the work that still guides me today.

Over the years, that foundation has allowed me to do what matters most… help people. Whether it’s protecting a lifetime of savings from the high cost of long-term care or creating a thoughtful estate and disability plan, there is nothing more rewarding than easing a client’s worries. The thank-you notes, flowers, and yes, even the cookies, have meant more than I can say.

Being part of Elder Law from its early days has also given me the opportunity to share what I’ve learned. I’ve had the privilege of teaching, writing, and speaking with fellow attorneys, and I’m grateful for the recognition that has come along the way.

One of my greatest joys has been building an all-women firm filled with talented, compassionate professionals who truly care about our clients. Mentoring so many remarkable women and watching them grow into confident, accomplished attorneys and staff has been incredibly fulfilling.

And then there’s Lisa Valente. I first met Lisa when she joined the firm as a high school file clerk. Today, she is my partner and an exceptional attorney. Watching her journey has been one of the highlights of my career.

Thirty-five years in, I feel just as energized and grateful as I did on day one. Here’s to the clients who have trusted us, the colleagues who have inspired us, and the future ahead.

This week’s blog was written by our Founding Partner, Ellen Makofsky, Esq.
