Putting a Plan in Place

While sitting in traffic waiting for the light to turn, I noticed the white Honda SUV in front of me sporting a bumper sticker:
“When I die I’m leaving everything to the dog.”
It made me chuckle; a suburban mom declaring her pooch as the object of her ultimate affection.
Leaving our fortunes, large or small, is the last gift we get to make. Some fantasize about the joy a bequest will bring to loved ones, while others enjoy thoughts of eventually extinguishing a grandchild’s long held student debt. Some are concerned that an inheritance will be dissipated by a spendthrift child or a divorce proceeding.
Musing about what will happen when death comes is common, but it does not set a plan in place.
While you might want to leave something for your pet dog, few actually want to leave everything to Fido.
