Lisa R. Valente is the Managing Partner at Makofsky Valente Law Group, P.C., with offices in Garden City, New York. She has been selected to the SuperLawyers Rising Star and the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America lists for the last several years. Lisa was recently named a 2025 Top 50 Women in Business by Long Island Business News. She was also selected as a recipient of the 17th Assembly District’s “Women of Distinction” Award for 2021. Lisa is a cum laude graduate of Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. She received her B.A. in Politics, Economics and Law with honors from SUNY College at Old Westbury. Prior to becoming an attorney, Lisa worked at the Firm for many years as a senior paralegal. Lisa has extensive substantive and procedural knowledge in matters concerning Elder Law, Medicaid, asset protection planning, estate planning, guardianships, probate, and estate administration.
Lisa is a member of the New York State Bar Association (“NYSBA”) and its Elder Law and Special Needs, Trusts and Estates and Young Lawyers Sections. Lisa serves as the 10th District Delegate for NYSBA’s Elder Law and Special Needs Section. In addition, Lisa is a Vice-Chair of the Continuing Legal Education committee of the Trusts and Estates Section of NYSBA. Lisa is also a member of the Nassau County Bar Association and is an active member of its Elder Law, Social Services and Health Advocacy and Surrogate’s Court and Estates committees. She is an immediate past Chair of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Elder Law, Social Services and Health Advocacy committee. In addition, Lisa is a member of the Portuguese American Bar Association and is a Board member of the New York Portuguese-American Leadership Council. Lisa was inducted into the New York Portuguese-American Women Hall of Fame in February, 2020, and she was also the recipient of the 2020 International Women’s Day award from Associação Girassol for her accomplishments as a strong Portuguese-American woman.
Lisa is a respected writer and was selected as the winner of the 2019 Elder and Special Needs Law Journal Writing Competition which was based on her article titled “Constitutional Challenges to Article 17-A Guardianships,” which has since been reprinted and cited by others in the legal community. In addition, Lisa authored an article for the Nassau Lawyer titled “Drafting Estate Planning Documents for Non-English Speaking Clients” (Nassau Lawyer, March, 2020).
Lisa concentrates her legal efforts on probate and estate administration, trust administration, accountings, beneficiary representation, asset protection planning, Medicaid applications, and drafting various estate planning documents for clients such as Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Health Care Proxies. Lisa is a lively lecturer and has given both in person and virtual presentations to various organizations and businesses, including a webinar on “Digital Assets” to the Nassau County Bar Association, and in person presentations on “Medicaid and long-term care planning” to local home care agencies and financial planners. Furthermore, Lisa has appeared on the radio and teaches adult education courses at local public schools. She is passionate about educating the community at large about Elder Law, estate planning and Medicaid planning techniques.
Lisa is bi-lingual with a fluency in both English and Portuguese. She is passionate about providing her clients with the utmost personal and high-quality legal service. Outside the office and court, Lisa is an active member of her local parish and serves as a Trustee of her parish. During her downtime, Lisa enjoys watching sunsets, cooking and spending time with her husband, three children and fur baby, Toby.
