Merry & Meaningful Topics - Makofsky Valente Law Group, P.C.

Will you be seeing your family over the holiday? If so, you could have a wonderful opportunity to interview an older family member. A recent article in the New York Times explored the idea of how interviewing loved ones can bring you closer and shine a light on your family history.

The article recommends finding a quiet place for the conversation where you won’t be distracted, and using a cellphone to record the audio. Once you are both comfortable, you can try out one or more of the following conversation starters…

1. Did you ever get in trouble as a child?
A lot of fun stories can come from this question and it’s a great icebreaker. Another great icebreaker – Do you have any secret talents?

2. What did your childhood bedroom look like?
Questions about day-to-day childhood experiences are great conversation starters. Other great questions in this category include – Tell me about your parents or grandparents, or what was a typical Saturday morning like when you were growing up?

3. What was one of your favorite trips?
Asking what the ‘best” or “favorite” meal or trip that a person has had can be a little daunting. Phrasing it as “one of your favorites” makes it easier to answer.

4. Who were the loves of your life?
This is a question that makes seniors reflect back on their lives. When you are ready to dig deeper, this is a great question to ask, as is what are you most proud of, or what were your major heartbreaks or disappointments.

5. Tell me that old chestnut again.
Even stories that have been told a thousand times before have value and are meaningful to the teller.

Final Thoughts – The article advises patience, with both yourself and your interviewee, and suggests not asking all the questions in one sitting. Even if the process feels awkward at the moment, you will appreciate having done it for years to come.

Conversations with family members are important and can also help reveal potential cognitive changes or indicate when a loved one may benefit from addition support.

We wish you a peaceful and joyous Holiday Season. If you need us, we are only a phone call or e-mail away.
