Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams!
March 6 is National Slam the Scam day, designated by Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General to raise awareness of government imposter scams which are rampant across the United States. Slam the Scam day is part of National Consumer Protection week, which runs from March 2-8.
National Slam the Scam day is aimed to protect the public from scammers who are impersonating government agencies, such as Social Security, Medicare, or the IRS. The government warns that you should not trust your caller ID because scammers are able to replicate numbers.
So how can you tell if a call is a scam?: Here are some tips… It is likely to be a scam if:
– The caller asks for a payment.
– The caller asks for personal information, such as date of birth or social security number.
– The caller makes threats or warns you that you will lose a benefit.
– The caller demands that you act immediately.
What should you do if you get a scam call?
– Hang up!
– Do not provide any personal information.
– If you receive a suspicious call, text or email that mentions Social Security, ignore it and report the fraud here – https://oig.ssa.gov/report/
You can help stop fraud by sharing this information with your friends and relatives. Together, we can Slam the Scam!
